Veronica will focus on PBIS:
This workshop will be focused on creating and maintaining a positive classroom culture using PBIS systems and strategies that work for the active elementary music room. These researched-based strategies have been used by Veronica Starcher to create positive and productive relationships with her music students for over a decade. Ms. Starcher will give an overview of PBIS (it is not just a token economy) along with PBIS strategies that work in very active music classrooms. Interventions for addressing Tier I and II behaviors will be discussed along with considering some Social Emotional Learning approaches that support all students. Hopefully these strategies can support you in creating a more positive and productive elementary music room for you and your students.
Matthew will focus on SEL:
Let CASEL be your guide! Learn how CASEL's Social and Emotional Learning Competencies can be integrated with what we already do in the music classroom. Join us as we explore joyful music making, collaborative group work, and storytelling through the lens of social and emotional learning to address the needs of our students.

About Veronica & Matthew:
Veronica Starcher has been a San Luis Valley educator for 15 years and spent 14 years as an elementary music teacher at Bill Metz Elementary School in Monte Vista, CO.
Ms. Starcher also spent four semesters teaching the Elementary Music Methods Course at Adams State University highlighting Orff instruction and classroom management. Other than teaching music, Veronica’s educational passion lies in creating positive classroom and school culture. She proudly serves as the Culture and Climate Coordinator for the Monte Vista School District and trains with the Office of Learning Supports at the Colorado Department of Education in order to support PBIS within MTSS in Monte Vista. Veronica has also had the pleasure of working with nine student teachers, along with several apple students (ASU education program), during her tenure as the music teacher at Bill Metz. Shifting from the music classroom, Veronica is now using her music education background to support elementary students as a math and reading interventionist. In the future Ms. Starcher would like to use her skills and knowledge as an interventionist and music teacher to coach teachers in classroom management and positive behavior interventions and supports. She believes that all teachers can benefit from PBIS strategies and that having a musician and music teacher in a coaching position can help advocate for the arts in education.
Veronica received her Bachelor of Education in Music from Kent State University in 2002 and her Masters of Music Education in 2015 from Adams State University. She has completed Orff Levels I and II at the University of Northern Colorado and has been an active member of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Orff Schulwerk Association since 2004.
Matthew Pedregón teaches elementary music in south suburban Denver and has taught in schools representing a broad range of communities. He earned his master's degree in music education with an Orff Schulwerk concentration from the University of St. Thomas and holds an Orff Mastery certificate from the same institution. He is also a past president of the New Mexico chapter of the American Orff Schulwerk Association. Matthew recently conducted a study on trauma-informed teaching practices in the elementary music classroom, authored an article on the topic for the Orff Echo, and is highly involved with several social justice endeavors in his school district.
